Mankell (zuletzt: "Kennedys Hirn": BA 4/06) schreibt über das Afrika, das er kennt und das so anders ist, als wir Europäer es uns vorstellen. Felisberto, ein alter Schwarzer, fungiert als Erzähler vieler Episoden über seine weitverzweigte Familie. Er versucht, das Ende des Kolonialismus und Afrikas Weg in die Unabhängigkeit begreiflich zu machen. Kleine Geschichten, die Träume und Geister, auch Quälgeister beschwören. Die wichtigste Gestalt ist dabei die tote Ahnfrau Samina, die im Alter von 312 Jahren starb. In den Geschichten wird immer wieder das Unverständnis zwischen Schwarzen und Weißen deutlich. Mankell, der in einer Vormerkung angibt, 25 Jahre an diesem Text gearbeitet zu haben, merkt man seine Liebe zu diesem Kontinent an, der uns alle viel mehr interessieren sollte. Für alle Bibliotheken.
