Die Idee, mithilfe von Kleinkrediten den Armen eine Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe in die Hand zu geben und ihnen durch eigene Tatkraft ein besseres Leben zu ermöglichen, erschien so überzeugend, dass Muhammed Yunus (vgl. M. Yunus: "Die Armut besiegen", BA 7/08), der dieses Konzept mit der Gründung der Grameen-Banks in Bangladesch verwirklichte, 2006 den Friedensnobelpreis erhielt. Inzwischen ist Ernüchterung eingetreten. Selbstmorde indischer Kleinbauern aufgrund von Überschuldung, Wucherzinsen und rabiate Methoden der Geldeintreiber machten negative Schlagzeilen. Eine kritische Fachtagung - deren Quintessenz die Beiträge dieses Buches zusammenfassen - bündelte 2013 die Erkenntnisse der Skeptiker des Mikrofinanzsystems, das aus dieser Sicht als Teil einer neoliberalen Entwicklungspolitik erscheint, die staatliche Fürsorgepflicht durch private Eingliederung der Armen in den Finanzsektor ersetzt. Neben der vergleichbar kritischen Analyse von G. Klas: "Die Mikrofinanz-Industrie" (ID-B 4/12) als gut zugänglicher Beitrag zu dieser entwicklungspolitischen Debatte für politisch Interessierte empfohlen. (2)
