Diese Arbeit wurde mit dem Karl Heinz Di tze-Preis der Universität Hamburg ausgezeichnet. Obwohl Gustav Mahlers Entwurf zu einer Zehnten Symphonie im Particell durchgehend ausgeführt ist, galten große Teile des Instrumentalwerks lange als skizzenhaft und unfertig. Die gründliche Analyse des Notentextes zeigt nun, dass die Form aller fünf Sätze wie auch der Gesamtanlage symphonisch ausgestaltet ist. Mahler entwickelte in diesem Werk nicht nur seine motivische Variantentechnik weiter, sondern hat auch – mehr noch als in der Neunten Symphonie – in rhythmischer, harmonischer und formaler Hinsicht Teil am Aufbruch der musikalischen Moderne um 1910. Durch die Rekonstruktion der Entstehungsgeschichte und die Einbeziehung zahlreicher, bislang unbekannter Quellen können außerdem biographische Bezüge und der Gehalt der Komposition genauer interpretiert werden. Im dritten Teil des Buches wird schließlich die gesamte Rezeptionsgeschichte des Werkes dargestellt – von den ersten Aufführungsbemühungen Alma Mahlers bis hin zu einem Vergleich der insgesamt sechs mittlerweile öffentlich aufgeführten orchestralen Gesamtfassungen.
