Die «propagandistische» Bedeutung geht aus offiziellen Berichten über Bälle, Krönungen, Hochzeiten, feierliche Einzüge und Beisetzungen hervor. Das Zeitalter Ludwigs XIV., le siècle de Louis XIV, wie es Voltaire trotz aller Kritik anerkennend bezeichnet, ist auch eine Geschichte europäischer Kultur, beginnend mit der Zeit vom Westfälischen Frieden (1648) bis zum Tod des Königs 1715, dessen Regierungszeit (1643-1715) dieses Zeitalter prägte und ihm seinen Namen gab. In Ludwig XIV. ist der monarchische Typus bis noch ins 18. Jahrhundert – trotz verheerender Kriege und finalen Scheiterns – beispielhaft repräsentiert.
