Die Geschichte der Nietzsche-Rezeption ist nicht von den Verstellungen und politischen Zurichtungen der Nietzsche-Texte durch die Tätigkeit des Weimarer Nietzsche-Archivs zu trennen. Die Arbeit untersucht die historischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Bedingungen im Vorfeld der Archivgründung. Sie beleuchtet Nietzsches eigene Editionstätigkeit ebenso wie die Beziehungen zu seinen Verlegern, sein Ringen um die typographische Gestalt der Schriften und die Entstehung der ersten Gesamtausgabe. Die Arbeit zeigt Tendenzen einer problematischen Nietzsche-Rezeption und -Edition bereits vor der Gründung des Archivs auf. War es Nietzsches Intention für ein zwar kleines aber erlesenes Publikum zu schreiben, bedient die Editionspolitik des Archivs eine denkbar breite Leserschaft. Ein von der Archivleitung autorisierter, kanonisch gewordener Textkorpus wird in diversen Ausstattungsvarianten vom limitierten Prachtband bis zur preiswerten Kriegsausgabe dem Buchmarkt zur Verfügung gestellt.
