Die Problematik der Vermischung von Geschichtsschreibung und Dichtung im Bereich des historisch-biographischen Romans ist Thema dieses Buches. Als Beispiel wird der 1933 erschienene Roman «Der Schuhmeier» von Robert Ascher herangezogen, dessen Vorlagen einer quellenkritischen Überprüfung unterzogen werden. Zudem wird der Entstehungskontext im Zusammenhang mit der sozialdemokratischen Kulturpolitik im Roten Wien und vor dem historischen Hintergrund der 1930er Jahre in Österreich skizziert. Weiterhin werden Besonderheiten wie z. B. der gezielte Einsatz von Dialekt untersucht sowie die Intention des Autors bzw. die Wirkung des Romans erörtert.
