Wer sich mit der Frage beschäftigt, wie Theologie funktionieren kann, wird auch die Kirche miteinzubeziehen haben. Diese Arbeit untersucht dazu systematisch die Veröffentlichungen zweier Autoren, die in der deutschsprachigen theologischen Diskussion wenig Beachtung gefunden haben. Beide, der US-amerikanische Theologe Avery Dulles und der aus Oberschlesien stammende Münchener Theologe Leo Scheffczyk, haben sich intensiv mit theologischer Methodologie beschäftigt, und dabei spielte das Thema der Katholizität der Kirche eine wichtige Rolle. Beide Autoren gelten als Vertreter einer traditionsbewussten und konservativen Theologie. Da gegenwärtig eine große Zahl von Theologiestudierenden Interesse an einer solchen Theologie zeigt, scheint es sinnvoll, deren Stärken und Schwächen am Beispiel dieser beiden Theologen zu erörtern.
