Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) gehört zu den am intensivsten erforschten deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsautoren, die Zahl der erschienenen Beiträge ist inzwischen fast unüberschaubar. Der Versuch, eine Bibliographie der Forschungsliteratur zu Bernhard zusammenzustellen und in Buchform zu veröffentlichen, ist jedoch lange nicht mehr unternommen worden. Demnach sind alle bisher erschienenen Bernhard-Bibliographien überholt. Zwar gibt es einige Internet-Datenbanken, die einen Teil der Forschung aufführen, jedoch sind sie durchaus lückenhaft und lassen nur im Ansatz eine gezielte Suche unter bestimmten Aspekten zu. Diese Bibliographie hingegen hat die einschlägige Fachliteratur nahezu vollständig erfasst. Vor allem aber folgt sie einer systematischen Ordnung und ermöglicht so dem Nutzer einen raschen Zugriff auf die Titel von Beiträgen zu bestimmten Bernhard-Werken oder Fragestellungen.
