Durch Grammatikalisierung entwickeln lexikalische Zeichen zunehmend grammatische Funktionen. So können aus ehemals konkreten Verben schließlich Hilfsverben entstehen. Das deutsche Verb bekommen erfüllt in Verbindung mit Partizipien bereits grammatische Funktion (Stichwort: Rezipientenpassiv). Doch bekommen findet auch mit zu-Infinitiven Verwendung. Aus dem Englischen und anderen Sprachen ist bekannt, dass Verben aus dem Umfeld von bekommen durch die Kombination mit Infinitiven modale Bedeutung – oft im Sinne von Erlaubnis, Möglichkeit oder Notwendigkeit – erlangen können. Aber wie sieht es im Deutschen aus? Eine breit angelegte Korpusanalyse des heutigen Deutschen klärt Verwendungsmuster, Bedeutung und Funktion von bekommen mit zu-Infinitiv und zeigt den Stand der Auxiliarisierung.
