Unter ihren immer autokratischer agierenden Herrschern Viktor Orbán und Recep Tayyip Erdoğan haben sich beide Länder in den vergangenen Jahren immer mehr vom Westen abgewandt und insbesondere Menschenrechte systematisch eingeschränkt. Eng mit der Garantie von Menschenrechten verknüpft ist der Schutz von Minderheiten. Dieser wurde beiden Staaten als Verlierern des Ersten Weltkrieges in den Friedensverträgen von Trianon und Sèvres (später: Lausanne) gegen ihren Willen aufgezwungen. So litt Ungarn unter seinem «Trianon-Trauma» und die Türkei unter ihrem «Sèvres-Syndrom». Der Autor untersucht, wie unterschiedlich beide Länder mit dieser Last umgegangen sind und wie sich der Schutz von Minderheiten auf deren Staatsgebiet seitdem entwickelt hat
