Die beiden mitteldeutschen Epen «Graf Rudolf» und «Herzog Ernst» spielen zwar in den neuesten Darstellungen der Geschichte der deutschen Regionalliteratur eine Rolle, aber ihre Einordnung in Gattungen lässt Fragen offen. Zur Diskussion stehen ihre Verbindung zur Heldenepik sowie ihre Rezeption besonders im mitteldeutschen Kulturraum. Dadurch, dass der Autor die Werke in die historischen Zusammenhänge des ausgehenden 12. und beginnenden 13. Jahrhunderts einordnet und Motivverwandtschaften als Ausdruck des im Hochmittelalter blühenden Kulturaustausches interpretiert, werden die bis in die jüngste Zeit gängigen Bezeichnungen «Fabulierlust» oder «orientalische Exotik» obsolet. Der Autor hebt die Einzigartigkeit dieser Epen ebenso wie ihre Vorbildhaftigkeit hervor, indem er sie in weltliterarische Zusammenhänge einordnet.
