Leben und Werk von Johann Elias Schlegel sind in höchstem Maße interkulturell und kosmopolitisch. Am Beispiel der persönlichen und literarischen Beziehung zum dänischen Frühaufklärer Ludvig Holberg thematisiert die Autorin die produktive Begegnung mit dem kulturell und literarisch «Fremden» bei Schlegel. Sie untersucht die Lustspiele und Komödienpoetiken der beiden Dichter sowie die Darstellung Holbergs in Schlegels kritischen und publizistischen Schriften, um die Bedeutung von Holbergs Einfluss auf Schlegels Weiterentwicklung als Lustspieldichter zu zeigen. Es wird deutlich, dass er in seinem dramatischen und theoretischen Werk nicht nur weit über Holberg, sondern insbesondere in seiner Kopenhagener Zeit auch über die Dramenpoetologie und -praxis der europäischen Aufklärung hinausgeht.
