Ludwig Wittgenstein erscheint im Werk W. G. Sebalds häufig. Dieses Buch stellt ihn als zentrale Figur in zweien seiner Werke dar. Es stellt eine Analogie zwischen dem literarischen Konzept des Synoptischen Blicks und dem sprachkritischen Werkzeug der Übersichtlichen Darstellung her, und es nimmt eine Verortung in der Nachkriegsliteratur sowie eine Nutzbarmachung Wittgensteinscher Begriffe für die Literaturwissenschaft vor. Sebalds Gesamtwerk wird als Versuch begriffen, das philosophische Konzept des Zeigens auf literarischer Ebene umzusetzen. Es werden Gemeinsamkeiten auf den Ebenen von Stil, Bildverständnis und Erkenntnisinteresse herausgearbeitet, und es wird erörtert, inwieweit der Synoptische Blick tatsächlich mit der Übersichtlichen Darstellung vergleichbar ist und wie dieses Konzept als Gegenentwurf zu Schreibweisen anderer Autoren innerhalb der sog. Holocaustliteratur zu verorten ist. Eignet es sich zum Schreiben über die Shoah in besonderem Maße? Sind dabei eigene Kriterien aufzustellen?
