Ein friedliches Zusammenleben von Arabern und Juden scheint noch möglich, als Eva Samuel 1932 nach Palästina reist, voll Neugier auf das Land, das sie als ihre eigentliche Heimat betrachtet. Zunächst ist sie noch unsicher, ob sie dort als Keramikerin oder als Mitglied in einem Kibbuz wird leben können. Wie es ihr gelingt, schließlich als selbständige Keramikerin in Palästina Fuß zu fassen, schildert sie fast wöchentlich in Briefen an ihre in Deutschland lebenden Eltern, nach deren Tod in Theresienstadt an eine Freundin der Familie. Sie lässt das Leben in Palästina bis zum Unabhängigkeitskrieg 1948 lebendig werden mit Alltagssorgen, Festen, Reise- und Einwanderungsmöglichkeiten. Auch die Sorge um die politische Entwicklung kommt immer wieder zur Sprache.
