Dieser Band geht auf empirischer Grundlage unter Verwendung linguistisch-pragmatischer sowie kulturwissenschaftlicher Methoden der Vielfalt des Argumentierens in Schule und Wissenschaft nach. Adressiert werden historische und interkulturelle Aspekte wie auch solche von Mehrsprachigkeit, und zwar sowohl aus analytischer als auch aus didaktischer Perspektive. An mündlichen und schriftlichen Beispielen wird aufgezeigt, welche Rolle dem Argumentieren in der Wissenskommunikation zukam beziehungsweise – auch kulturkontrastiv – zukommt. Zudem geht es um eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Funktionen, die das Argumentieren erfüllt. Berücksichtigt sind das Englische als Wissenschaftssprache und Lingua franca, besonders auch im südlichen Afrika, Russisch, Italienisch und Latein sowie das Deutsche als Fremdsprache.
