Marcus Jansen untersucht das Prämierungsverfahren des Preises der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung. Dabei bestimmt er die Merkmale prämierter und nominierter Aufsätze und untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Thyssenpreis und anderen Leistungsmerkmalen der Wissenschaft. Der Autor zeigt, dass der Thyssenpreis keine völlig neue Dimension der Exzellenzzuschreibung darstellt und mit anderen qualitativen Leistungsmerkmalen der Forschung korreliert. Aus der weiteren Untersuchung geht hervor, dass unterschiedliche Autorentypen im Prämierungsverfahren zum Zuge kommen und prämierte sowie nominierte Aufsätze sich inhaltlich zum Teil deutlich von nicht nominierten Aufsätzen unterscheiden. Als mögliche Ursachen werden Selektions- und Diskriminierungseffekte sowie tatsächliche Qualitätsunterschiede diskutiert, die in den unterschiedlichen Merkmalen zum Ausdruck kommen.
