Thomas Bardy untersucht auf der Basis von 162 Unterrichtsstunden erstmals empirisch, wie Lehrpersonen im Mathematikunterricht bestimmten Wissenselementen Geltung verleihen, d.h. wie „gemeinsames, geltendes Wissen“ entstehen kann. Über die Analyse dieser Daten gewinnt der Autor Formen, Kategorien und Arten der Herstellung von Geltung, die er zu den Dimensionen konventionell, konsensuell und argumentativ zusammenfasst. Er zeigt, dass die konventionelle Art der Herstellung von Geltung dominiert (63 Prozent), während in nur vier Prozent der Gesamtzeit die Herstellung von Geltung argumentativ erfolgt. Sechs Idealtypen von Unterrichtsstunden im Hinblick auf die Herstellung von Geltung konnten herausgearbeitet werden.
