Um die Jahreswende 1915/16 treffen etwa 22000 österreichisch-ungarische Kriegsgefangene auf Asinara ein, einer kleinen Insel im Nordwesten von Sardinien, wo in aller Eile eines der überfülltesten Lager Italiens im Ersten Weltkrieg entsteht. Es handelt sich um Soldaten, die in den ersten Monaten nach Kriegsausbruch von serbischen Truppen gefangen genommen und bei deren Flucht vor den neuerlich einfallenden feindlichen Kontingenten im Oktober 1915 mitgeschleppt wurden. Der riesige Flüchtlingsstrom - serbisches Militär, zivile Flüchtlinge und etwa 40000 Gefangene - forderte Tausende Todesopfer. Von denen, die die "Teufelsinsel" erreichten, kamen zahlreiche um: Militär- und Sanitätsbehörden sahen sich außerstande, innerhalb kürzester Frist Unterkunft, Verpflegung und Obsorge für so viele Gefangene bereitzustellen. Für die italienische Regierung hingegen hatte das politische Kalkül, Soldaten des Kriegsgegners als Faustpfand zu besitzen, Priorität. Nur etwa 15000-16000 Gefangene waren Ende Juli 1916 noch am Leben. Luca Gorgolini zeichnet das dramatische Schicksal der österreichisch-ungarischen Soldaten auf Asinara unter Einbezug der Vorgeschichte seit ihrem Einmarsch in Serbien. (MOD)
