Russland 1915: In einem kleinen Dorf verhindert der 16jährige Bauernsohn Georgi mit Glück und Geistesgegenwart ein Attentat auf ein Mitglied der Zarenfamilie. Zar Nikolaus II. ruft Georgi daraufhin nach Sankt Petersburg, wo er ihn zum Leibwächter seines einzigen Sohnes ernennt, der nicht nur als Thronfolger in ständiger Lebensgefahr schwebt. Georgi weicht dem kleinen Zaren fortan nicht mehr von der Seite und findet in ihm einen Freund. In den prunkvollen Sälen des Winterpalais begegnet er auch der Zarentochter Anastasia. Sie verlieben sich, wohl wissend, dass diese Liebe nicht sein darf. Doch Georgi ist entschlossen, für Anastasia bis zum Äusteren zu gehen. Aber dann erhebt sich das Volk gegen den Zaren; das ganze Land taumelt dem Abgrund der Revolution entgegen. Anastasia und ihre Familie werden an einen geheimen Ort verschleppt ins "Haus der besonderen Verwendung".
