Karl Horst Hödicke sah vom Fenster seines Ateliers in der Dessauer Straße seit 1975 das Niemandsland am Potsdamer Platz, seine Gobi, mit der Mauer - und danach. Auf der Mauer sah er Ungeheuer sitzen, die wachsam und böse nach drüben gierten. Berliner führten ihre Hunde aus, Kinder und Halbstarke bekritzelten den 〉〉antifaschistischen Schutzwall〈〈. In der Ferne die Philharmonie, das Brandenburger Tor, die Siegessäule mit der Goldelse, die Wilhelmstraße, den Martin-Gropius-Bau bis zum Teufelsberg. Im Kalten Krieg war der Ort zerrieben und leergefegt worden.
