Nach dem Tod Lullys 1687 sei es, so ein zementiertes Geschichtsbild, zu einer Krise in der Tragédie en musique gekommen, die erst durch Rameaus Hippolyte et Aricie von 1733 bewältigt worden sei. Tatsächlich aber durchlief die Tragédie en musique in diesen 46 Jahren konzeptionelle Transformationen, welche die sich ändernden gesellschaftlichen Vorzeichen reflektieren. Die vorliegende Studie beleuchtet diese Entwicklung der Tragédie en musique in ihren vielfältigen Kontexten und aus verschiedenen Perspektiven. Dabei wird ein großes dynamisches Potenzial der Gattung fassbar, das die Schöpfer der Tragédie en musique jener Zeit als wichtige Wegbereiter für Rameau würdigt.
