Ahrens untersucht den Einfluß der Diskussion um die Biowissen-schaften auf die kulturelle Defini-tion des Menschen. Unter Rückgriff auf Unterlagen der Enquete-Kommissionen des Deutschen Bundestages zum Thema Biowissenschaften arbeitet er zunächst die kultursemioti-schen und ideengeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen der Diskussion heraus. So kann er schließlich eine Analyse der bioethischen und biopolitischen Debatte selbst vorlegen, die bis an die Grenze dessen reicht, was bisher "anthropologische Differenz“ hieß.
