Unter dem Einsatz ihres Lebens stellen Fotografen und zunehmend Fotografinnen weiterhin weltweit Bilder von Kriegen her. Digitalisierung und Informationsrevolution verändern deren Bedeutung und Funktion grundlegend. In der dreitausendjährigen Geschichte der Kriegsbilder hat die Fotografie zu einem tiefen Einschnitt geführt. Nach zaghaften Anfängen im 19ten Jahrhundert entwickelte sich im Ersten Weltkrieg eine professionelle Fotografie, die mit Problemen der Darstellbarkeit des technologischen Kriegs kämpfte, sowie die Massenfotografie der Amateure. Ein Jahrzehnt später bildete sich im Rahmen des öffentlichen Mediendiskurses der Fotojournalismus, der die Kriegsfotografie im engeren Sinn ausbildete. Seit dem Spanischen Bürgerkrieg kombinierte sie die Absicht der Dokumentation mit einem humanistischen Engagement. Ihre Fotos prägen das Kriegsbild bis in die Gegenwart. Der radikal veränderte Bildermarkt des digitalen Zeitalters führt zum Ende der Kriegsfotografie und zu einem neuen Kriegsbild. Der Autor zieht Bilanz aus über 20 Jahren Auseinandersetzung mit Kriegsfotografie und fügt Gedanken zu ihrer Zukunft an. (MOD)
