Immer wieder wird versucht, die im 6. Jahrhundert auftretenden Baiern auf romanische Herkunft zurückzuführen, obwohl ihre Sprache und Dialekte germanischen Ursprungs sind. Als angebliche Zeugnisse dienen meistens die eingedeutschten Gewässer- und Ortsnamen antik-romanischer Herkunft. In dem bis 488 n. Chr. römischen Voralpenraum südlich der Donau vom Lech bis zur Enns in Bayern, Salzburg und Oberösterreich wurden gegenüber der Vielzahl rein deutscher Namen nur relativ wenige Namen antik-romanischen Ursprungs ins Bairisch-Althochdeutsche tradiert. Diese geringen Zeugnisse werden nach Etymologie und Eindeutschungszeit mit linguistischen Methoden analysiert und danach beurteilt, wann sie von den ersten germanisch-römischen Kontakten im 1./2. Jahrhundert an bis in die althochdeutsche Zeit längstens um die Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts ins Althochdeutsche eingegliedert wurden. Daraus kann man schließen, dass das Romanische im Voralpenraum durchschnittlich und nur inselhaft bis ins beginnende 9. Jahrhundert und nur vereinzelt wie um die Stadt Salzburg auch noch bis gegen die Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts fortlebte. Die Annahme angeblicher romanischer Herkunft der Baiern lässt sich weder mit Hilfe der Sprache noch der Namen erweisen und ist aufzugeben.
