Als 1918 in München die Republik ausgerufen wird, sind unter den Revolutionären auch zahlreiche Schriftsteller, die für Demokratie und Menschlichkeit eintreten. Doch den Ideen und Utopien von Kurt Eisner, Gustav Landauer, Erich Mühsam und Ernst Toller begegnen politische Gegenspieler – auch mit Verleumdungen von eindeutig völkischer oder antisemitischer Prägung. Hier werden Entwicklungslinien deutlich, die bruchlos bis in die NS-Zeit führen. Neben dem Blick auf den Wandel Münchens hin zum Hort der Reaktion steht die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Literatur und Politik. Die vier Schriftsteller schaffen Visionen, deretwegen sie bald um ihr Leben bangen müssen. In persönlichen Briefen, Tagebuchnotizen und berührenden Werken lassen sich ihre Wege eindrücklich nachempfinden. Der Band ist die Begleitpublikation zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Monacensia.
