Von den Anfängen in vorrömischer Zeit über die Gründung kurz nach 17. v.Chr. als "Augusta Treverorum" zur Zeit von Augustus bis zum Beginn des Mittelalters erstreckt sich der beleuchtete Zeitraum. Der Text ist ausführlich und mit großem Fachwissen, aber anregend und spannend abgefasst. Die Entwicklung der Stadt, ihre Archäologie, ihre Architektur, die Lebensart der Bewohner, Aufstieg, Krisen, das Kommen und Gehen der Herrscher werden in chronologischem Ablauf geschildert. Hervorzuheben ist überdies, mit wie viel Sachverstand und Gefühl hier das Bildmaterial ausgewählt wurde - stets in perfekter Korrespondenz mit dem Text. Neben den Abbildungen von antiken Fundstücken, Gebäuden und Kunstwerken finden sich z.B. auch viele gelungene und sehr anschauliche Rekonstruktionen von den einstigen Bauten, sodass diese im Auge des Betrachters wieder "auferstehen". Empfehlenswert!
