"This book aims to record East German design -- before it disappears for ever. Consumer products beyond the Wall, from cigarettes to panties, have little in common with their Western counterparts. Given the absence of competition and advertising, East German products felt no need to make a pitch, either by name or by design and packaging. The articles portrayed in this book are not SED showpieces, but everyday utility articles of drab GDR-reality. They look clumsy and come with a built-in yesteryear quality. This seemingly bizarre collection of goods has its origin in the exhibition 'SED -- Schönes Einheitsdesign' (a play on words using the initials of the former Socialist Unity Party), which was organized by Matthias Dietz and Christian Habernoll on 27 August 1989 at the Habernoll Gallery, Dreieich, near Frankfurt am Main. They exhibited East German consumer products daringly acquired beforehand in the GDR. The publishers took over the title of the exhibition and extended the collection for this book through purchases made in East Berlin in December 1989."
