In der Mitte Europas gelegen, lebt das Deutsche nicht zuletzt vom Kontakt mit anderen Sprachen, diese Kontakte sind vielfältig, und sie hinterlassen ihre Spuren. Nur im Kontakt mit seinen großen europäischen Nachbarn und in der permanenten Orientierung an ihnen ist das Deutsche zu der europäischen Kultursprache geworden ist, die es ist. Gleichwohl ist, durch die ebenfalls europäische Gleichsetzung von Sprache und Nation befördert, die Gesellschaft im mehrheitlichen Bewusstsein der Sprecher stark einsprachig geprägt - und zwar selbst dort, wo durch Migration und durch die Entwicklungen, die man gemeinhin mit dem Schlagwort Globalisierung belegt, in Wirklichkeit mehrere Sprachen koexistieren. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen der Frage nach, welche Rollen das Deutsche unter diesem Gesichtspunkt - als europäische Kultursprache, als Mehrheits- und als Minderheitssprache in mehrsprachigen Gesellschaften - spielte und spielt und wie die Sprecher des Deutschen in den verschiedenen Konstellationen mit dem jeweils Fremden umgegangen sind und umgehen.
