Der Band ist fokussiert auf die begriffs- und mediengeschichtliche Aufarbeitung der zentralen Kategorie des Boulevards, welche die mediale Öffentlichkeit seit 1900 wesentlich bestimmt. Diese zunächst urbanistische Kategorie hat damit ihren Ausgangspunkt in einer die gegenwärtige Medienkultur prägenden, kulturkritisch-diagnostischen These: Es ist die These der 'Boulevardisierung' unserer Öffentlichkeit. Für die Begriffsge schichte des Boulevards ist bedeutsam, dass schon sehr früh, d.h. um 1900, eine sukzessive semantische Ausweitung des Begriffs stattfindet. Zwar beginnt die strategische Geschichte des Boulevards im Rahmen des pragmatisch- urbanistischen Transformationsprozesses der sogenannten Hausmannisierung von Paris, doch gilt der Boulevard bereits um die Jahrhundertwende 1900 als Metapher für Massenkultur und zugleich als mediale Kategorie, die sich abgelöst hat von der ursprünglichen architektonischen Codierung
