Moderne linguistische Pragmatik ist ein Forschungsprogramm, das sich mit der Frage beschäftigt, wie das Verhältnis zwischen einer sprachlichen Äußerung und dem, was mit ihr ausgedrückt wird, beschrieben werden kann. Die Ansätze dieses Programms gehen zurück auf die Einsichten H.P. Grices, der Fälle des ironischen und metaphorischen Sprachgebrauchs systematisch beschrieben hat. Die neueren pragmatischen Forschungsansätze nehmen an, dass das Ausgedrückte auch im wörtlichen Sprachgebrauch mehr umfasst als das Gesagte. Ausgehend von dieser Annahme sollen die theoretischen Grundlagen und teils experimentellen Methoden der modernen linguistischen Pragmatik sowie einige Anwendungsfelder einführend dargestellt werden.
