Die größte demographische Herausforderung unserer Zeit ist die Alterung der Gesellschaft. Damit verbunden ist die Frage nach der Qualität der Lebensjahre. Mit dem neuen Ansatz der "aktiven Lebenserwartung" wird der Gesundheitszustand der Bevölkerung analysiert, wobei die funktionalen Aspekte von Krankheit besonders berücksichtigt werden. Rainer Unger untersucht die zeitliche Entwicklung der aktiven Lebenserwartung nach der Methode der Mehrzustands-Sterbetafel im Vergleich von Deutschland und den USA. Er geht der Frage nach den sozialen Verursachungsmechanismen des aktiven, d.h. krankheitsfreien Anteils an Lebensjahren nach und analysiert den potentiellen Einfluss makrostruktureller Rahmenbedingungen auf dessen Entwicklung.
