In der betriebswirtschaftlichen Literatur besteht weitgehend Einigkeit hinsichtlich der Vorteile eines unternehmensübergreifenden Supply Chain Management. Dennoch erfolgt die Umsetzung in der unternehmerischen Praxis recht schleppend. Dies liegt u.a. daran, dass Instrumente fehlen, die den Erfolg übergreifender Investitionen und Optimierungen für die beteiligten Unternehmen transparent machen. Indem er die Konzepte Supply Chain Management und Balanced Scorecard integriert, zeigt Klaus Zimmermann, wie die Balanced Scorecard eingesetzt werden kann, um Wertschöpfungsketten zielorientiert zu steuern. Ausgehend von Anforderungen an die Steuerung von Wertschöpfungsketten werden bestehende Supply-Chain-Controllinginstrumente bewertet. Anschließend wird ein methodischer Rahmen für eine Supply Chain Balanced Scorecard entwickelt. Den Einsatz einer Supply Chain Balanced Scorecard analysiert der Autor anhand zweier Fallstudien aus der Automobil- und der Chemieindustrie.
