Klopstocks Auseinandersetzung mit der bildenden Kunst bildet nicht nur eine eigenständige Dimension innerhalb seiner poetologischen Reflexionen, sondern zeichnet sich darüber hinaus durch eine uneingeschränkte Parteilichkeit zugunsten der Literatur aus. Anders als seine Zeitgenossen hielt Klopstock an der Vorzugsdiskussion der Künste fest, erhob die Dichtung als die illusionsstärkere Darstellungsform triumphal über die bildenden Künste, war bemüht, dieser Superiorität auch institutionell Ausdruck innerhalb des gesellschaftlichen Systems der Künste und Wissenschaften zu verleihen und ließ an der Rangordnung von Dichtung und bildender Kunst selbst in der persönlichen Zusammenarbeit mit einzelnen Künstlern keinen Zweifel aufkommen. Die Studie rekonstruiert die Radikalität seiner Positionen, verfolgt die Diskussion um die poetische Mahlerey und Illusionsästhetik im 18. Jahrhundert und beleuchtet am Fallbeispiel Klopstocks die Konfliktgeschichte zwischen einem Autor und den Illustratoren seiner Werke.
