Präsident Obamas Amtsantritt fiel mit dem Beginn der tiefsten Wirtschaftskrise seit der Großen Depression (1929-1941) zusammen. Obama wollte die USA einen, stattdessen ist das Land gespaltener denn je, Republikaner und Demokraten stehen sich im Wahljahr unversöhnlich gegenüber, die viel propagierte Hoffnung scheint dahin. Die beiden US-Korrespondenten der "Süddeutschen Zeitung", profunde Amerikakenner (hier zuletzt: R. Klüver: "Allein unter Doppel-Whoppern", ID-B 5/11), haben sich in 6-jähriger Teamarbeit und bei Reisen quer durchs Land aufgemacht, die Befindlichkeiten der Menschen vor Ort auszuloten. Entstanden sind informative Nahaufnahmen. Angesichts demonstrierter Unfähigkeit von republikanischer Seite scheint für die Autoren die Wiederwahl Obamas die einzige Chance auf Wiedererstarkung der Supermacht. Anders gewichtet haben J. Kornblum und D. Kronzucker das Thema früher bereits aufgegriffen ("Mission Amerika", BA 8/09), auch auf das nach wie vor aktuelle Buch von A. Böhm ("Die Amerikaner", BA 11/04) sei hier noch mal verwiesen. Gut lesbarer Einstiegstitel ins Thema in angenehmer Schriftgröße. (2)

Im Wahljahr zeigen sich die USA gespaltener denn je, Republikaner und Demokraten stehen sich unversöhnlich gegenüber. Für die US-Korrespondenten der "Süddeutschen Zeitung" scheint dennoch die Wiederwahl Präsident Obamas der einzig gangbare Weg aus der gegenwärtigen tiefen Wirtschaftskrise.
