Im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert emigrierten Deutsche, genauso wie Angehörige anderer Nationalitäten, in großer Zahl aus Ost-, Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa nach Übersee. In der Hoffnung auf bessere Lebensbedingungen machten sie sich über Häfen in Westeuropa auf den Weg in die USA, nach Kanada, Südamerika, Australien oder in die deutschen Kolonien. Nach einer langen Schiffspassage sahen sie sich mit den Einreisebehörden konfrontiert, die über Aufnahme oder Ablehnung entschieden. Für viele dieser Emigranten erfüllte sich dann der Traum vom „neuen Leben“, und so führen heute noch zahlreiche Menschen in den USA und anderen Ländern ihre familiären Wurzeln auf deutsche Auswanderer aus dem östlichen Europa zurück. Der Band vereint Referate, die auf der Tagung „Auf nach Übersee! Deutsche Auswanderung aus dem östlichen Europa“ im November 2012 in Oldenburg gehalten wurden. Im Rahmen dieser Gemeinschaftsveranstaltung der Kommission für deutsche und osteuropäische Volkskunde und des Bundesinstituts für Kultur und Geschichte der Deutschen im östlichen Europa wurden die Motive der Emigranten, der Ablauf der Auswanderung und die lebensweltlichen Konsequenzen ebenso beleuchtet wie die Widerspiegelung von Migrationserfahrungen etwa in Liedern oder biographischen Erzählungen.
