Synästhesien dienten einer Vielzahl von Künstlern der klassischen Moderne wie Wassily Kandinsky und Alexander Skrjabin als Referenzpunkte für die künstlerische Formgebung des Materials. In Kunstwerken der abstrakten Malerei und der atonalen Musik sowie in medialen Kunstwerken wird dieser Einfluss deutlich sicht- und hörbar. Sie zeugen von kognitiven Schemata, die unterschiedliche Systeme der Sinneswahrnehmung vernetzen und einem unmittelbar sinnlichen Dialog des Künstlers mit dem Material entspringen. In diesem Sinne lassen sich Synästhesien auch als sinnstiftende Schemata begreifen, die beispielsweise in der Kunst manifest werden. Diese Hypothese schließt mit ein, dass die neuronalen Prozesse, die der künstlerische Produktionsprozess involviert, jenen ähneln, die die aktuelle Synästhesieforschung beschreibt.
