Der Band wird eingeleitet mit einer Darstellung der Entwicklung einer Bucht zu einem Hafen, angefangen von der Steinzeit, über die Zeit der frühen Bauern, der Bronzezeit bis hin zur Eisenzeit. Es folgen auf je 1 grossformatigen Doppelseite die Geschichte des Hafens mit den besonderen Aspekten der jeweiligen Zeit: Römerzeit 150 n.Chr., 950 (Neuanfang), 1190 (neue Horizonte), 1450 (Jahrmarkt), 1590 (neue Welten und Waren), 1630 (Reichtum), 1690 (Piraten), 1770 (schwere Zeiten), 1890 (Industrie, Kolonien), 1930 (Luxus, Wirtschaftskrise), heute (Arbeit, Freizeit). Auf den detailreichen, anschaulichen und farblich sehr ansprechenden Bildern gibt es einen kurzen Sachtext, ein Suchspiel, viele Einzelheiten werden benannt, in der umlaufenden Schrift z.T. auch näher erklärt. 2 Kapitel befassen sich mit wichtigen Handelshäfen und der Entwicklung der Schiffe. Inhaltsverzeichnis und Register erschliessen den Band.
