Die Erstausgabe dieses Buches des 2007 verstorbenen französischen Historikers erschien bereits 2000 im Verlag DuMont unter dem Titel "Griechische Mythen neu erzählt" (hier nicht besprochen). Nicht im Stil von Gustav Schwabs "Sagen des klassischen Altertums" (hier zuletzt ID-A 22/11) nacherzählend, sondern eher beschreibend nähert sich Vernant ("Der Mensch der griechischen Antike", ID-G 3/94) dem Thema. Die Entstehung des Universums (Gaia), der Kampf der Götter gegen die Titanen (Zeus), die Welt der Menschen (Prometheus), der Trojanische Krieg und die Fahrten des Odysseus stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt. In klarer und einfacher Sprache erhält der Leser somit einen 1. Einblick in die Geschichten und Mythen der alten Griechen, ohne sich auf sprachlich überkommene Ausgaben stützen zu müssen.
