Emil Nolde verbrachte häufig den Winter in Berlin, der Stadt, die er liebte und der er doch mit Misstrauen begegnete. Die in diesem Katalog wiedergegebenen Gemälde, Aquarelle und Zeichnungen, die das Berliner Nachtleben thematisieren, stammen aus dem Winter 1910/11. Einige ausdrucksstarke Aquarelle sind unmittelbar während Theateraufführungen - inszeniert von Max Reinhardt - entstanden. Zahlreiche Tanzbilder beweisen Noldes Vorliebe auch für dieses Motiv. Die Inspiration Noldes durch diese bunte Welt und ihre Darsteller scheint weniger bekannt als z.B. seine Auseinandersetzung mit biblischen Themen (vgl. Manfred Reuther, BA 3/03) oder seine Landschaftsbilder (vgl. Martin Urban, BA 8/05). Mit Fotografien und Dokumenten angereicherte Aufsätze fassen diesen Einfluss auf das Beste in Worte und gehen dabei auch ausführlicher auf einzelne Bilder ein.
