Was ist moderne, was ist zeitgenössische Kunst? Und ist das überhaupt Kunst? Das frisch aufgemachte Sachbilderbuch für Jung und Alt widmet sich dieser Frage anhand von ca. 60 Werken aus der Sammlung des Museum of Modern Art, New York. Nach Themen wie "Licht der Fantasie", "Tropfen, Punkte, Wellen" oder "Was steckt in einem Namen", denen je eine der 32 Doppelseiten gewidmet ist, wird eine breite Auswahl an Ideen und Techniken von Künstler/-innen aus aller Welt vorgestellt und anhand einfacher anregender Texte erklärt. Dabei wird klar, dass zeitgenössische Künstler/-innen teilweise noch auf klassische Techniken und Materialien wie Farbe auf Leinwand, Marmor oder Bronze setzen, dass daneben aber auch Medien wie Performance, Video oder Installation hinzugekommen sind und dass es zumeist um ein Experimentieren, um ein Ausreizen der Konventionen geht. Dabei wird ein vergleichendes Sehen angeregt. Unter den Künstlern finden sich Figuren wie Beuys, Yves Klein oder Agnes Martin, aber auch viele jüngere, darunter Olafur Eliasson, Gillian Wearing und Francis Alys. Mit breitem Glossar.
