Die Blockmodellanalyse hat sich seit ihrer Entwicklung durch die Harvard-Strukturalisten um Harrison White als ein vielseitig verwendetes und hilfreiches Instrument für die Analyse sozialer Netzwerke etabliert. Mit dem Verfahren kann die Struktur komplexer sozialer Netzwerke (z.B. Freundschafts-, Unternehmens-, Politiknetzwerke) sichtbar gemacht werden. Doch wie lässt sich die Blockmodellanalyse konkret anwenden? Und auf welchem sozialtheoretischen Entwurf basiert das Verfahren? Richard Heidler gibt einen Überblick über die Blockmodellanalyse, die er aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet. Die Anwendung der Methode wird am Beispiel der Analyse eines regionalen Interorganisationsnetzwerkes im Hochtechnologiebereich vorgeführt. Dabei werden konkret die verschiedenen Schritte der Analyse und die methodischen Alternativen erläutert. Im Anschluss an eine wissenschaftshistorische und methodische Einordnung wird das theoretische Konzept des Verfahrens herausgearbeitet: Die durch die Blockmodellanalyse erhaltene Netzwerkstruktur kann dabei theoretisch sowohl als Ursache als auch als Ergebnis von sozialen Prozesse verstanden werden.
