Mehr als 70.000 Patientinnen und Patienten psychiatrischer Anstalten wurden im Rahmen der NS-"Euthanasie"-Aktion T4 getötet. Wer waren diese Menschen, was war ihr Schicksal? Mit diesen Fragen befasst sich ein von 13 Fachleuten (v.a. Mediziner und Historiker) erarbeitetes "Lesebuch". Im Anschluss an 5 einführende Kapitel (u.a. mit Vor- und Ideengeschichte der NS-"Euthanasie" und statistischen Untersuchungen zur Opfergruppe) rekonstruierten die Autoren anhand von Krankenakten die Lebensgeschichten von 23 Menschen im Alter von 3-87 Jahren, die als "lebensunwert" ermordet wurden. Ihre gelungene Absicht, damit diesen Personen, stellvertretend für die große Zahl der anonym gebliebenen Opfer, einen Teil ihrer Individualität zurückzugeben und so ein lebendiges Mahnmal gegen das Vergessen zu errichten, macht das Buch zu einer berührenden und aufrüttelnden Lektüre, die, obwohl methodisch anspruchsvoll, einen möglichst großen Leserkreis finden sollte.
