Während sich die deutschen Zionisten von einer Kooperation mit den Nationalsozialisten erhofften, günstige Bedingungen für die jüdische Auswanderung nach Palästina zu erlangen bzw. dort einen jüdischen Staat errichten zu können, wollten die Nationalsozialisten mit Hilfe der zionistischen Bewegung ihrem Ziel eines "judenreinen" Deutschen Reiches näherkommen. Der amerikanische Historiker analysiert die ungleichen und komplexen Beziehungen sowohl im nationalsozialistischen Kontext des modernen deutschen Antisemitismus, als auch mit Blick auf den Prozess, der zum nationalsozialistischen Massenmord an den europäischen Juden führte, sowie mit Rückgriff auf die spezifische Rolle des modernen Zionismus in der deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte. Nicosia warnt davor, die Vergangenheit aus der Gegenwart heraus zu beurteilen, denn aus einer Post-Holocaust-Perspektive sei es ein Leichtes, die frühe zionistische Hoffnung auf eine Form der Übereinkunft mit den antisemitischen Nationalsozialisten als "schockierend naiv und illusorisch" abzutun. Darüber hinaus stellt er fest, dass keine jüdische Organisation im Dritten Reich die Wahl hatte, eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem NS-Staat einfach abzulehnen
