Wir sprechen im Alltag, »wie uns der Schnabel gewachsen ist«, und tatsächlich sind die Schnäbel vielfältig gewachsen. Wir kennen seit langem altersspezifische Sprechweisen (Schüler- oder Studentenjargon), Sondersprachen nach Milieu oder Herkunft, Dialekte und Soziolekte, Kauderwelsch oder Rotwelsch, daneben aber auch Fachsprachen bestimmter Berufe. Jäger und Fischer, Seeleute und Bergleute, Drucker, Kaufleute, Mediziner und Juristen haben ihre eigenen »Fachausdrücke«. Mit dem Siegeszug der Naturwissenschaften sind immer neue Kürzel der internen Verständigung entstanden. Schließlich verwenden heute die Medien, das Internet, das globale Management und das Militär eigene »Sprachen«. In Valerio 14/2012 wird den Spannungen zwischen Fachsprachen und Normalsprache nachgegangen. Warum entstehen solche speziellen Jargons oder Fachsprachen, welche Funktion haben sie? „Die Wissenschaftsjournalistin Julia Voss und der Jurist Michael Stolleis haben verschieden Autoren gebeten sich Gedanken zu machen über Sinn und Zweck von Fachsprache. Die Herausgeber selbst geben dem Leser zunächst einige Definitionen mit auf den Weg, unter anderem diese: "Wir verstehen unter Fachsprachen jene Sonderbildungen, die sich sowohl zur internen Verständigung im 'Fach' als auch zur Abgrenzung von anderen bei der Berufsausübung entwickelt haben." "Glanz und Elend heutiger und historischer Fachsprache sind Thema des Bandes", so die Herausgeber.
