Entwürfe alternativer Gemeinwesen sind bis heute mit dem Namen der utopischen Insel verbunden, die Thomas Morus vor 500 Jahren beschrieben hat. "Utopia" ist aber nicht nur eine politische, sondern auch eine literarische Erfindung. Dieser Doppelcharakter von politischem Gehalt und poetischer Form, der die Gattung Utopie kennzeichnet, steht in 'Fiktion und Praxis' im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung. Michael Dominik Hagel schreibt die Geschichte der Verknüpfung von Politik und Fiktion im Genre der Utopie vom Anfang des 16. bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts. Gegenstand der Analyse sind nicht nur berühmte Werke von Morus, Machiavelli, Campanella, Bacon, J. G. Schnabel, Mercier oder Wieland, sondern auch eine Vielzahl heute vergessener Texte und Bilder. "Fiktion und Praxis" erzählt die Wissensgeschichte der Utopie vor der wissenschaftlichen Erfindung der Gattung zwischen Staatswissenschaft und Ästhetik des 19. Jahrhunderts. Michael Dominik Hagel, geb. 1981, studierte Literaturwissenschaft in Wien und Berlin. Er war Junior Fellow am Internationalen Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften (IFK) in Wien und Assistent an der Université de Neuchâtel. Zurzeit arbeitet er als Stipendiat des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
