Das syrische Mädchen Rama erzählt vom friedlichen Alltag ihrer Familie. Als der Krieg beginnt, verändert sich alles. Es entsteht ein Flüchtlingsstrom, dem sich auch Ramas Familie anschließt, als Bomben in der Nähe ihres Hauses fallen. Eine gefährliche Reise führt die Familie über das Meer und durch mehrere Länder, bis sie einen Ort finden, an dem sie willkommen sind. Ein Neuanfang ist möglich. - Die preisgekrönte niederländische Autorin hat Kontakt mit dem syrischen Stein-Künstler N. Ali Badr gesucht, den sie durch das Internet entdeckte. Zu ihrer Flüchtlings-Geschichte legte er auf dem Dach seines Hauses faszinierende Bilder aus Kieselsteinen unterschiedlicher Größe, Form und Farbe. So entstanden Fotos seiner Stein-Collagen auf hellem oder dunklem Hintergrund. Der Text in einfachen kindlichen, teils nachdenklichen Sätzen ist auf Arabisch und Deutsch abgedruckt. Trotz Hinweis auf Menschen, die die Reise nicht überlebt haben, bleibt Rama hoffnungsvoll. Die Bilder sprechen unmittelbar an.
