Die Zuwendung der Systemtheorie zu Fragen der Kunst eröffnet hier neue Interpretationsmöglichkeiten, die insbesondere die Rolle solcher selbstreflexiven Formen von Kunst für die Ausdifferenzierung und Autonomie des Kunstsystems in den Blick bekommen. In dieser Perspektive untersucht Christian Schuldt metafiktionale Romane von Laurence Sterne und Flann O'Brien. Seine Analyse verdeutlicht, dass die Evolution der Kunst entscheidend von Formen der Selbstreflexivität und Selbstbeobachtung innerhalb der Kunst vorangetrieben wird. Und sie veranschaulicht ganz allgemein, wie die Systemtheorie fruchtbar für die Literaturwissenschaft genutzt werden kann.
