Die amerikanische Autorin (vgl. zuletzt "Ruf der Karibik", ID-A 20/12) erzählt parallel 2 wahre Geschichten, die beide ihren Anfang im südlichen Sudan nehmen: Im Jahr 2008 ist Nya 11 Jahre alt und es ist ihre Aufgabe, täglich viele Stunden zum Wasserholen zu gehen. Wie ein Wunder erscheint es ihr, als schließlich im Dorf mit Spendengeldern ein Brunnen gebaut wird. - Im Jahr 1985 ist Salva 11 Jahre alt, als er Hals über Kopf vor bewaffneten Truppen fliehen muss, die aus dem Norden anrücken. Orientierungslos und voller Sorge um seine Angehörigen wandert er unter größten Strapazen bis zum Nil, durchquert die Wüste und erreicht ein Lager in Äthiopien. Nach 6 Jahren muss er von dort erneut fliehen und gelangt nach Kenia. Als 22-Jähriger wird Salva in den USA von einer Familie aufgenommen und beginnt mit dem Einwerben von Geldern für Hilfsprojekte in seiner Heimat. Die detaillierte, eindringliche Schilderung von Einzelschicksalen rund um die Themen: Krieg, Flucht und Überlebenskampf in Dürregebieten stellt Verständnis her, gibt der Not ein Gesicht.
