Die Philosophie der Sprache im Vormärz ist heute eine unbekannte Epoche, deren Wiederentdeckung sich lohnt. Protagonisten wie Otto Friedrich Gruppe, Conrad Hermann oder Karl Leonhard Reinhold entwarfen im 19. Jahrhundert - oft in Opposition zu der wirkmächtigen Philosophie Hegels - einen Blick auf die Sprache als Organon des Denkens. Lange vor Wittgenstein und dem linguistic turn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden Kategorien befragt, diskutiert und umgestoßen, die als prägend gelten konnten, solange die philosophische Überlieferung der Thematisierung der Sprache (zurückreichend bis zu Platon, Aristoteles, Locke u.a.) nicht die Kritik der Sprache an die Seite stellte. Im Kontext der Kritik konturieren sich Momente der Antizipation späterer sprachphilosophischer Motive (Bedeutung als Gebrauch, Begriffsanalyse, Absehen von reifizierenden Substantiven, Solipsismuskritik u.a.), welche die Sprachkritik des 19. Jahrhunderts als Sammelpunkt jener Entwicklungen erkennen lassen, die das Verständnis des philosophischen Diskurses der Moderne bestimmen sollten
