Empfehlenswerte Darstellungen zur deutschen Kolonialgeschichte hat es in jüngerer Zeit einige gegeben, z. B. "Deutsche Kolonien" von G. Graichen (BA 1/06). Die Rolle der Askari, der "farbigen", oft "vor Ort" für den Dienst in den deutschen Kolonial- bzw. "Schutz"truppen rekrutierten Soldaten wurde dort allerdings eher nur gestreift. Das Einzelschicksal eines Askari zeichnete in der gleichen Schriftenreihe bereits M. Bechhaus-Gerst in "Treu bis in den Tod" (BA 2/08) eindrucksvoll nach. Der mit der Kolonialgeschichte vertraute Historiker bringt nun mit seinem Buch endlich Licht in das Dunkel dieses kaum erforschten Themas, stellt nach den jeweiligen Kolonien in Afrika, Asien und Ozeanien geordnet die Geschichte der Söldner dar. Er beleuchtet ihre Beweggründe, z. B. den Wunsch nach sozialem Aufstieg, ihre Lebenswege nach dem 1. Weltkrieg - u. a. mit eingeschobenen exemplarischen Porträts - ihren Status und ihr Ansehen in Weimarer Republik bzw. 3. Reich. - Ein in Vergessenheit geratenes Kapitel deutscher Geschichte, anschaulich und kompetent aufgearbeitet und dabei spannend zu lesen. (2)
